In addition to this, an abundance of birdlife is scattered amongst permanent water holes and the acacia lined Moyo River which traverses the entire reserve. Nestles between the Aberdare Mountain Range and the majestic Mt. Kenya, Solio Game Reserve is a true Jewel not to be missed while visiting Laikipia.

Solio Game Reserve is also internationally recognized as the most successful private rhinoceros breeding reseverve in Kenya and is responsible for having translocated to other parts of Kenya over 100 black and 60 white rhinoceros over the years, including 6 to Uganda. The main purpose of the game reserve is to provide a refuge to wildlife which would otherwise be deprived of suitable habitat and such, is an immensely important contribution to the conservation of wildlife in Kenya.

The Carr-Hartley family has long had a relationship with Solio, as the conservancy was originally stocked with rhinoceros and other wild animals by Mikey Carr-Hartley's family to create the reserve which protects the endangered Black Rhino.

Solio's geographic position makes it the perfect destination enroute to the "Northern Circuit" and provides plenty of exciting activities including walking, trout fishing on the Aberdares and Mt Kenya, helicopter flights and horse riding. The lodge is accessible both by vehicle and plane. Charter flights can access the Solio Private Airfield and scheduled flights regularly fly to Nanyuki ( a 20 minute road transfer from Solio). By road, the journey takes around 3 hours from Nairobi (situated 180 kilometers north of Nairobi or 30 kilometers north of Nyeri on the Nyeri-Nyahururu road).
